Bible Verses to Help You Overcome Your Fear of Commitment

Do you need help to overcome your fear of commitment? The Bible holds principles that can help you trust God more, so you are better prepared to make commitments. Let’s look at these Bible verses that can help you in the struggles that you face today.

Use these Bible verses anytime the fear of commitment rises in you. Write them out and post them where you will see them so that they will be in the front of your mind. You can also save them to your smartphone, so they are always with you when you are tempted to fear.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. – 1 John 4:18, NIV

You may have a fear of commitment because you worry there will be negative consequences for your choices. Perhaps you have faced rejection in the past and this informs your current lack of ability to commit. It’s common for people to hesitate to make commitments due to the fears they hold inside.

But when you internalize God’s love for you, which is unconditional and limitless, you can have the security you need to make confident decisions. You can repeat to yourself, “There is no fear in love,” remembering that God himself is love, and will give you the strength to make commitments.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4, NIV

As you struggle to make commitments, you may feel like you are going through a dark valley. Your valley could be clouded with confusion, worry, and anxiety. But even when you are walking through the dark valley of the fear of commitment, God is right beside you.

He will protect you from any evil that Satan wants to work against you with his rod and staff of truth. With God at your side, you will feel comforted and uplifted, guided through the valley with the light of his love.

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1, NIV

The word stronghold in the Bible has two meanings. One meaning is a place where Satan sets up a power base in your life, a place where he consistently attempts you in a certain area. For you, the stronghold might be your fear of commitment. Another meaning of the word is a safe and secure place, a refuge that exists in God’s presence.

You have the choice to either run to the stronghold of safety God provides for you or allow Satan to continue building the power of defeat in your life through his stronghold. As you work to overcome your fear of commitment, you can pray that God will break any strongholds that Satan has in your life. You can find safety and comfort in God’s presence alone.

How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. – Psalm 31:19, NIV

Bible Verses to Help You Overcome Your Fear of CommitmentOne of the ways to overcome your fear of commitment is to focus on the future that God has in mind for you. He has a life of abundance prepared for you if you are willing to walk in obedience to his will and his ways. As you pray and seek his will while you take refuge in him, God will reveal what his will is for your life.

He will show you that he has good things in mind for you, not the things that you worry will happen if you don’t make the right commitment. You will learn more about the right commitments to make to God as you study his word daily and open your heart in prayer.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. – Psalm 34:4, NIV

Your fear of commitment could be related to many different anxieties. For example, if you have a fear of commitment about settling down with one person, you may have anxieties about finances, making decisions together, whether your relationship will stay healthy, if or when you will have children, where you will live, and many other decisions.

But if you commit each of these fears to God in prayer, he will answer you as you seek his answers for your life more than you want your own will to be carried out. A Christian counselor also helps you address all angles of your situation that could be causing you to feel fearful.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. – Psalm 34:7, NIV

Your fear of commitment is not only on a human level. It is also a way that Satan keeps you held down in the spiritual world. However, as a believer in God, you have angels helping you around the clock. Even better, Jesus is interceding on your behalf to the Father, and the Holy Spirit is advocating for you.

You always have help in the spiritual realm, and this can be a great comfort in the battles you face. Ask God to deliver you from your fears and remember that you’ve got his powers surrounding you in the spiritual places.

The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. – Psalm 147:11, NIV

The fear of the Lord is different from the fear you have about commitment. Fear of the Lord is a healthy reverence and respect for his majesty, power, and splendor. When you think about how awesome and mighty God is, and how sovereign he is over every detail on the earth, this can give you hope that he’s in charge of your situation too.

The Lord delights in you when you choose to see him this way. In that context, you can place your hope in God and trust in his unfailing love for you as you move forward in making commitments.

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. – Psalm 37:4-6, NIV

Have you ever taken a moment to consider what you want from life? This question can help you discover the desires of your heart. If you choose to take delight in God, you will align your desires with his revealed will.

He also wants you to commit your ways to him and trust him to make good on his promises to you. As you grow to trust him, you will feel rewarded and blessed, and you’ll have greater peace in the decisions you need to make.

With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. – Psalm 18:29, NIV

You may feel as if your fears are as large as an army and just as intimidating. Or you may feel like your fears or a high wall that you could not possibly climb yourself. But because God is all-powerful and mighty to save, he can help you make progress against the fears you face and climb up the wall of your fear of commitment. In his power, you can do things that are beyond your ability, including making the commitments you are so afraid to make.
